DUI are the three letters than can ruin your life. Everyday thousands of people in Texas get behind the wheel after a few too many drinks and put their lives and others in danger. You don’t have to be an alcoholic. It can happen to anyone.
Many people don’t realize they have an alcohol problem until they do something destructive that affects themselves and the lives of others. Few acts are more commonly destructive than driving under the influence. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), almost half of all drivers killed from car accidents had traces of drugs or alcohol in their system. Nearly a third of drivers who were arrested for DUI are repeat offenders.
But where does the problem begin? Many alcoholics and chronic drunk drivers begin in their teenage years. Some fall into the temptations of peer pressure, where many young adults try to prove they can handle a high level of alcohol. Others don’t want anybody to drive their car. The problem with teen drivers can be more hazardous because most have no knowledge of their alcohol tolerance level.
When alcohol is consumed in large amounts, it can impair coordination, cause disorientation and even blackouts. But those are just the short-term effects. Years of drinking can lead to heart disease, ulcers and cirrhosis of the liver.
Ending chronic drunk driving requires a strong commitment. It’s important to educate young people, your family members and people inside your community about its dangers and consequences. Chronic drinking and driving can cost you your career, freedom and your personal well-being. Don’t become another statistic.
